In the event of an actual fire, you should immediately take any and all actions necessary for your safety and the safety of others without regard for any fire rating of any product or assembly/system. *FIRE SAFETY CAUTION – Passing a fire test in a controlled laboratory setting and/or certifying or labeling a product as having a one-hour, two-hour, or any other fire resistance or protection rating and, therefore, as acceptable for use in certain fire rated assemblies/systems, does not mean that either a particular assembly/system incorporating the product, or any given piece of the product itself, will necessarily provide one-hour fire resistance, two-hour fire resistance, or any other specified fire resistance or protection in an actual fire. 2Consult UL Fire Resistance Directory for assembly information The gypsum and fiberglass are packed tighter and denser than with regular drywall. ![]() In addition to the usual gypsum found in regular drywall, fire-rated drywall contains glass fibers to form a super-tough core. Type X has a denser core and contains glass fibers that keep it from crumbling in the heat. Drywall typically comes in 1/4-inch, 3/8-inch, and 1/2-inch thicknesses. And it’s not just thickness that makes the difference. The sheathing should be covered by an exterior finish cladding or building felt or equivalent protection if weather conditions will be severe during construction. The 5/8-inch, fire-code drywall (called Type X) increases a wall’s fire rating to a minimum of 1 hour, from the 30-minute rating for standard -inch drywall. Local weather conditions will dictate the length of time sheathing may be left exposed. 2 ToughRock Sheathing is manufactured to meet the requirements of ASTM C1396, Section 9, and CSA-A82.27-M and Federal Specification SS-L-30D, Type II, Grade W, X and should be installed per ASTM C1280 and Gypsum Association documents GA-253 and GA-254ġToughRock® Sheathing is not intended for long-term exposure to the weather. 5/8” ToughRock Fireguard X Sheathing is UL and ULC classified Type X for use in a variety of fire-rated assemblies. 1 It is designed for direct mechanical attachment to wood or steel framing. 1/2″ ToughRock® Gypsum Sheathing and 5/8” ToughRock® Fireguard X® Sheathing are recommended for use in new building construction or renovation work that is covered by an exterior finish cladding such as vinyl/fiber cement siding, masonry veneer or wire lath stucco. ![]()
